Founded in 2009, Continuum Energy is one of India’s largest providers of renewable power to corporates in the commercial and industrial (C&I) segment.

With projects across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, Continuum currently supplies renewable power to 100+ industrial customers. Supported by leading banks and financial institutions, the company continues to expand its footprint in India’s clean energy transition.

The Challenge: Continuum was generating and managing massive volumes of data:
  • Data Growth – 33 TB of data with 250 GB added daily from databases and office files.
  • Backup Inefficiencies – Existing storage caused long backup times and degraded SQL Server performance.
  • Scalability Issues – Difficulty scaling and provisioning servers as workloads grew.
  • Access & Permissions – Required domain-level permissions using on-premises Active Directory (AD).
  • Hardware Dependency – Risk of data loss due to potential failures in on-premises infrastructure.
Continuum required a hybrid solution that was secure, scalable, and seamlessly integrated with their existing AD.

The Solution: Pentagon implemented a hybrid cloud file storage architecture on AWS:
  • Amazon FSx for Windows File Server – Provisioned with 40 TB storage in Multi-AZ for high availability.
  • AD Integration – FSx integrated with on-premises Microsoft AD for folder-based permissions and group policies.
  • Hybrid Connectivity – Configured Site-to-Site VPN for secure communication between on-premises and AWS.
  • Remote Access – Deployed EC2 OpenVPN server for up to 25 remote users to authenticate via AD credentials.
  • Data Migration & Backup – Used AWS DataSync to migrate files incrementally from on-premises storage to FSx. Daily backups with a 7-day retention ensured data resilience.
  • SQL Integration – SQL backups were written directly to FSx SMB mounts for improved performance.
  • Security Enhancements – Configured VPC Endpoints to ensure data traveled only via private links.
  • Monitoring & Alerts – Enabled CloudWatch to track free storage and send alerts proactively.

AWS Services Used:
  • Amazon FSx
  • AWS DataSync
  • Amazon EC2 (for OpenVPN server)
  • AWS Site-to-Site VPN
  • Amazon VPC Endpoints
  • AWS CloudWatch & CloudTrail
  • AWS IAM & KMS
