Our client is one of the largest global manufacturers of Vitamin D3, with expertise spanning niche APIs, integrated biotechnology platforms, and enzymes for antibiotic synthesis. They also provide environmental solutions for wastewater management and treatment, making them a key player in both healthcare and sustainability.
The Challenge: The client relied on an on-premises file server, which posed significant limitations:
Remote Access Restrictions – Users could not access data securely from remote locations. No Backup Mechanism – Lack of file server backup increased the risk of data loss. Authentication Gaps – Required integration with Active Directory (AD) for centralized access control. File Permissions – Needed to maintain file-level access permissions for users across locations. The company required a reliable, secure, and hybrid cloud storage solution that could integrate with their existing on-premises infrastructure while supporting disaster recovery.
The Solution: Pentagon designed and implemented a hybrid file server solution on Microsoft Azure, integrating it with the client’s on-premises systems: Hybrid Connectivity
Created a VPN Gateway (Basic/VPNGw1) with BGP routing for secure connectivity. Configured Point-to-Site (P2S) and Site-to-Site (S2S) VPN connections across all locations. File Server Modernization
Set up Azure File Share, joined to the on-premises Active Directory for user authentication. Enabled file-level access permissions synced with AD users. Configured Azure File Sync to replicate data between on-prem file servers and Azure File Share. Backup & Disaster Recovery
Implemented Azure Snapshot Backup for file shares. Configured DR by ensuring snapshots of file server data were replicated and recoverable.
Microsoft Azure Services Used:
Azure VPN Gateway (S2S & P2S) Client Certificates Azure File Share Azure Snapshot Backup Azure File Sync
Benefits
Hybrid Solution
Seamless sync between on-premises file servers and Azure File Share.
Remote Access
Employees securely accessed files from remote locations.
Data Protection
Snapshots ensured reliable backup and disaster recovery readiness.
File-Level Security
User-level permissions were preserved across cloud and on-prem environments.
Cost Efficiency
Pay-as-you-go model optimized infrastructure costs.
The Result
With Azure File Server, the client now operates a secure, high-performance, and hybrid file storage system, offering remote access, stronger security, and reliable backup — while future-proofing their IT infrastructure for scale and compliance.
