L&T Technology Services (LTTS) is a global leader in Engineering and R&D (ER&D) services, operating across 102 innovation and design centers worldwide. With over 1,145 patents filed and partnerships with 57 of the Global Top 100 ER&D spenders, LTTS has been at the forefront of technological advancement in smart manufacturing, industrial IoT, automotive engineering, and digital transformation. Renowned for innovations like the world’s first Autonomous Welding Robot, Solar Connectivity Drone, and the Smartest Campus in the World, LTTS continues to leverage digital technologies to enable smarter, safer, and more connected solutions globally.
The Challenge LTTS operated most of its production and non-production workloads on-premises, which resulted in several infrastructure and operational challenges:
High On-Premise Costs – Capital expenditure on servers, power, and maintenance continued to increase year over year. Scalability & Availability Constraints – Their MS-SQL based applications required “High Availability” and “Failover Clustering” configurations that were difficult to maintain on-prem. Backup & Data Resilience Issues – Manual database backup processes lacked scalability and reliability in case of failure. Underutilization of Infrastructure – Applications often ran during limited working hours, leading to poor resource utilization and higher costs. License & Maintenance Overheads – Managing MS-SQL licensing and server maintenance created recurring administrative burdens. The company needed a robust, secure, and automated cloud environment to improve operational efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness while ensuring high availability.
The Solution LTTS partnered with Pentagon to migrate its Pulse application and infrastructure to AWS Cloud, leveraging automation, scalability, and high availability capabilities. The solution utilized a structured migration framework across three key phases:
Assess Phase Using the AWS Application Discovery Service, the team conducted a detailed analysis of existing applications, interdependencies, and resource utilization. This phase identified performance baselines and established the migration roadmap.
Mobilize Phase The AWS Application Migration Service was used to replicate on-prem workloads and create a target environment within AWS. Core infrastructure components such as networking, security groups, and storage were configured for readiness and performance validation.
Migrate & Modernize Phase
Migrated applications and databases to Amazon EC2 instances hosted in multi-AZ VPC subnets for development, testing, and production environments. Configured SQL Always-On Failover Clustering across Availability Zones to ensure data replication and high availability. Deployed Elastic Load Balancers (ALB + NLB) for traffic management and Direct Connect for secure hybrid connectivity. Enabled EBS Snapshots for instance-level backups and S3 storage for scalable, policy-driven data retention. Implemented AWS CloudWatch and CloudTrail for performance monitoring, API tracking, and compliance logging. Automated server start/stop scheduling using AWS Lambda, optimizing costs by aligning uptime with business hours.
AWS Services Used
Amazon EC2 – Compute hosting for application and database servers Amazon VPC – Secure, isolated network environment Amazon ELB (ALB + NLB) – Load balancing and high availability Amazon EBS & S3 – Scalable backup and storage AWS Backup – Centralized backup management AWS Direct Connect & Transit Gateway – Hybrid connectivity AWS IAM – Access control and policy management Amazon CloudWatch & CloudTrail – Monitoring and audit tracking Microsoft Services Used:
Microsoft Windows Server & IIS Microsoft Active Directory Microsoft SQL Server (Enterprise Edition) Microsoft .NET Framework
